Palestine is a de jure sovereign state in Western Asia. It is officially governed by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and claims the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. However, its claimed territory has been occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War of 1967. The West Bank is currently split into 165 Palestinian “islands” under partial Palestinian National Authority (PNA) civil rule. There are 230 Israeli settlements. Gaza is under rule of Hamas.

Palestine has a population of 5,051,953 as of February 2020, ranked 121st in the world. Although Palestine claims Jerusalem as its capital, the city is under the control of Israel. The international community does not recognize Palestine’s and Israel’s claims to the city. The State of Palestine has been recognized by 138 of the 193 UN members. It has since 2012 had a status of a non-member observer state in the United Nations.
