This video takes you on a walk through the Imperial City (Walled City) and Forbidden City of Beijing. It goes from Tiananmen Square to Jingshan Hill.
The Forbidden City is a palace complex in Beijing, at the centre of the Imperial City of Beijing. Wikipedia writes that numerous opulent imperial gardens and temples surrounds it. The complex consists of 980 buildings with 8,886 rooms. It covers an area of 720,000 m2.
It was constructed from 1406 to 1420. Between 1420 and 1924 it served as the Chinese imperial palace and winter residence of the Emperor of China, from the Ming dynasty to the end of the Qing dynasty. This means that the Forbidden City was the home of Chinese emperors and their households, for over 500 years. During the same period, it was the ceremonial and political centre of the Chinese government.
“The Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Beijing and Shenyang” is no. 439 on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
