UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre’s short description of site no. 373:

“Stonehenge and Avebury, in Wiltshire, are among the most famous groups of megaliths in the world. The two sanctuaries consist of circles of menhirs arranged in a pattern whose astronomical significance is still being explored. These holy places and the nearby Neolithic sites are an incomparable testimony to prehistoric times.”

My visit

To be true I have not been to Avebury but I visited Stonehenge in 2005. This site, on a low hill with good views to all sites was very interesting. It is also one of the most famous sights in England. The strangeness of these rocks has drawn fascinated crowds for centuries. They have all wondered how and why somebody did such a thing to a heap of big rocks.
