Est. reading time:

Cesky Krumlov is a town in the south of the Czech Republic. It has a nice square and a mighty palace with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements.

The UNESCO World Heritage List includes more than a thousand properties with outstanding universal value. They are all part of the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

Official facts

  • Full name of site: Historic Centre of Cesky Krumlov

UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre’s short description of site no. 617:

“Situated on the banks of the Vltava river, the town was built around a 13th-century castle with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. It is an outstanding example of a small central European medieval town whose architectural heritage has remained intact thanks to its peaceful evolution over more than five centuries.”

“The town of ?eský Krumlov is located in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. The river meander and rocky slopes of the castle hill are the most important elements which along with the link to the picturesque neighbouring landscape, determine not only the impressive urban composition of the historic centre but the dominating position of the castle as well.”

My visit

I wrote this in my diary when I visited the city in 1990:

“The town is almost medieval, with narrow cobbled stoned streets and nice, small and well-kept houses. In the middle of the town, on a hill, towers the castle. We joined a guided tour – interesting.”
