Est. reading time:

The Historic Centre of Vienna has not really been at the centre of the world stage for a century, but the previous centuries have left an everlasting impact on music, monuments and buildings.

The UNESCO World Heritage List includes more than a thousand properties with outstanding universal value. They are all part of the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre’s short description of site no. 1033:

“Vienna developed from early Celtic and Roman settlements into a Medieval and Baroque city, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It played an essential role as a leading European music centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century. The historic centre of Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including Baroque castles and gardens, as well as the late-19th-century Ringstrasse lined with grand buildings, monuments and parks.”

My visit

I was in 1990 on an InterRail passing through Vienna. Here I found a pleasant city centre, quite a lot to see, and not least to eat. Try the famous Sacher Torte. I returned in 2019 and had many more impressions. Unfortunately I still haven’t found time to write about this last visit.
