World Heritage #1066 – Rhine Valley

In the upper Middle Rhine valley there are vineyards. There are also castles on the banks and hills surrounding this mighty river. There has been boat traffic on the Rhine for centuries.

The UNESCO World Heritage List includes more than a thousand properties with outstanding universal value. They are all part of the world’s cultural and natural heritage.

UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre’s short description of site no. 1066:

“The 65km-stretch of the Middle Rhine Valley, with its castles, historic towns and vineyards, graphically illustrates the long history of human involvement with a dramatic and varied natural landscape. It is intimately associated with history and legend and for centuries has exercised a powerful influence on writers, artists and composers.”

My visit

We drove along the Rhine the entire distance of this 65 km stretch between Bingen, Rüdesheim and Koblenz, stopping at various places along the way. We also stayed the night in a castle high above the river. Watch the video below to get an impression. This was an experience taken right out of the legends dating hundreds of years back in time.
